A Toast to Good Company on National Drink Wine Day

2 minute read

Four glasses of red wine with chocolate, walnut, strawberry, and blueberries—perfect for a toast to living well. Wine bottles behind.

A tasting gives neighbors something to talk about: a flavor they enjoy, a pairing they did not expect or a different opinion across the table. For National Drink Wine Day on February 18, The Terraces at Kingwood planned a red wine flight with food pairings. Sparkling juice, iced tea and other drinks offered ways to join without alcohol.

At The Terraces at Kingwood, we are raising a glass with a red wine flight chosen for its range of flavors, from light and bright to bold and spicy.

Why a Tasting Brings People Together

A tasting is a shared experience. Everyone tries the same thing, compares notes and discovers they do not always agree, which is half the fun. Whether someone is a longtime wine lover or simply curious, there is room at the table, and a glass of sparkling juice or iced tea works just as well for a toast.

Here is a closer look at the red wines featured in our National Drink Wine Day tasting.

Pinot Noir: Light and Bright

Light in body with bright acidity and red fruit notes, Pinot Noir is often a gentle place to start. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, roasted vegetables or fresh berries.

Cabernet Sauvignon: Bold and Full-Bodied

Cabernet Sauvignon is known for its bold, full-bodied character and firm structure. It pairs well with aged cheeses, walnuts or high-cacao dark chocolate.

Merlot: Smooth and Approachable

Merlot’s smooth, approachable style makes it a favorite among residents. Pair it with dark chocolate truffles, almonds or strawberries for a simple, satisfying treat.

Malbec: Deep Color, Rich Fruit

Malbec’s deep purple hue hints at its rich, dark-fruit flavor. This bold red pairs well with cacao-dusted nuts, blueberries or chili-infused dark chocolate for a little extra warmth.

Syrah/Shiraz: Spicy and Dark-Fruited

Syrah, also known as Shiraz, brings peppery, dark-fruit notes that pair nicely with dark chocolate with sea salt, dried cherries or mixed nuts.

The Pleasure of Pairing

Pairing wine with foods like dark chocolate, berries and nuts can bring out new flavors in both. Part of the enjoyment is in the experimenting: noticing how a square of chocolate softens a bold red, or how fresh berries brighten a lighter one.

A Gentle Reminder About Moderation

At Saga Senior Living, enjoying a celebration is always a personal choice. Not everyone drinks alcohol, and everyone is welcome to join in with whatever they prefer. For those who do, moderation matters, and because alcohol can interact with some medications and health conditions, it is a good idea to talk with your doctor about what is right for you.
