What assisted living is

Help with the day, and room for the rest

Assisted living is for seniors who want to stay independent but could use a hand with daily routines such as bathing, dressing or medication.

The help is built around the person, and the rest of the day looks like home: meals with friends, things to do and family who can visit just to visit.

Is it time?

Signs it may be time to look

There is rarely one moment that decides it. Families usually notice a few of these together.

  • Bathing, dressing or getting around is getting harder
  • Medications are missed or mixed up
  • Meals are skipped, or the fridge is nearly empty
  • There has been a fall, or a fear of falling
  • Days feel long and lonely
  • A family caregiver is stretched thin

Ways to pay for senior living

Families may use income, savings or proceeds from a home sale to pay for senior living. Long-term care insurance and VA benefits may help with eligible care costs. Elderlife Financial, a SilverAssist company, offers a free consultation to help you explore your options, including short-term financing when a move comes before a home sale.

As needs change

What happens when needs change

A care plan is not set once and forgotten. The team checks in with the resident and family and updates the plan as routines and needs change, so the help keeps fitting the person.

At Tarina of Kingwood and Tarina of Cypresswood, assisted living and memory care are under one roof. If memory care becomes appropriate, the team can discuss a move within the community, based on assessment and availability.

Sometimes a person comes to need more than assisted living is licensed to provide, such as ongoing skilled nursing. If that happens, the team talks with the resident and family early, explains why, and helps plan the next step, with the notice state rules require.

Questions families ask

What is the difference between assisted living and memory care?

Assisted living helps with daily routines in a residence of your own. Memory care is for people living with dementia, with a secure setting and a team trained in dementia care around the clock.

How is the care plan decided?

The community team talks with the resident and family about routines, preferences and the help that is wanted, and builds the plan from there. It changes as needs change.

Does Medicare pay for assisted living?

No. Medicare does not cover room, board or personal care in assisted living. Families often use savings, long-term care insurance, the sale of a home, VA Aid and Attendance or Elderlife financing.

Can family visit any time?

Families are welcome, and many join for meals and events. Each community can tell you about its visiting hours.

Can we come for lunch first?

Yes. Lunch is one of the ways to visit, along with an in-person tour or a live video tour.

Can couples live together in assisted living?

Often, yes. Couples can share a residence, and at Tarina of Kingwood and Tarina of Cypresswood a couple who need different kinds of support can live close together. Ask the community about the options that fit.
