Ways families pay

Where the money usually comes from

Your plan may bring together more than one option. Understanding what each can cover, alongside a community quote, helps you plan with a clearer picture of the cost.

  • Savings and income Savings, retirement accounts, investments and monthly income such as Social Security or a pension often cover part of the rate.
  • Selling a home For many families, the home is the biggest asset. A real estate agent with the Seniors Real Estate Specialist (SRES) credential can help you plan the sale around the move.
  • Bridge loans Waiting on a home sale or benefits? A short-term bridge loan can cover the cost of moving in until that money arrives.
  • Long-term care insurance If you have a policy, it may help with the cost of assisted living or memory care. A free policy review shows what it covers.
  • Life insurance Some life insurance policies can help pay for senior living, through the cash value or by selling the policy.
  • Tax deductions Some care costs may count as medical expenses for tax purposes. A tax advisor can tell you what applies to you. Read the tax guide

How it works

Three steps to a plan

  1. Tell us about your situation

Call the community you are interested in. A few questions about your timing, your home and any benefits are enough to start.

  2. Review your options together

Look at what is open to you, from a home sale to VA benefits to a short-term bridge loan. Elderlife Financial can walk you through it for free, with no obligation.

  3. Move forward with a plan

You will know how you plan to pay and what comes next, so you can focus on the move itself.

For veterans and surviving spouses

VA Aid and Attendance

VA Aid and Attendance may increase pension payments for eligible veterans and surviving spouses who meet care-related requirements. Eligibility also depends on pension, service, and financial criteria. A VA-accredited representative can help you understand the requirements.

Accredited agents can check eligibility and help with the paperwork. Ask the community team to connect you.

  • Added to a VA pension A monthly benefit for eligible wartime veterans and surviving spouses.
  • Everyday help For people who need help with activities of daily living.
  • Paperwork support Accredited agents can check eligibility and help you apply.

Questions families ask

Does it cost anything to talk with Elderlife?

No. The consultation is free, and you are under no obligation.

What is a bridge loan?

A short-term loan that covers the cost of moving in while you wait for other money to come through, such as a home sale or VA benefits. You repay it once those funds arrive.

Who qualifies for VA Aid and Attendance?

Eligible veterans and surviving spouses who meet VA pension rules, including service, age or disability, and income and net worth limits, and who need help with daily activities. Aid and Attendance is added to a VA pension. A VA-accredited representative can help you check eligibility.

Can we use more than one option?

Yes. Many families combine them, for example a bridge loan while a home sells, with VA benefits added once they are approved.

Who should we call first?

Call the community you are interested in. The team can answer questions about pricing and connect you with Elderlife.
