Senior living for families

Worried about Mom or Dad?

Noticing changes in a parent can leave you unsure where to start. These steps can help you understand what is happening, talk together and explore support, one question at a time.

Starting the conversation

  • Pick a calm moment, not right after a fall or a scare.
  • Start with what you've noticed and how you feel: "I've been worried since..." goes further than "You need to move."
  • Ask what matters most to them, and what they're worried about too.
  • Expect more than one conversation. It is a process, not a single talk.
  • Bring in someone they trust, such as a doctor, a sibling or a friend, if it helps.

If memory changes are part of the picture, our guide on when it may be time for memory care covers talking with a parent who is living with dementia.

Questions

Common questions from worried families

How do I know if it is time for help?

There is rarely one moment. Families usually notice several changes together, such as trouble keeping up with the house, missed medications, falls, weight loss or more time alone. The self-check and a visit with their doctor are good places to start.

What if my parent says no?

That is common. Keep the conversation open, focus on what matters to them, and start small, such as a visit for lunch. Many people feel differently once they see a place in person.

Do I have to decide right away?

No. Learning the options early means you can make a choice together, rather than in a hurry after a fall or a hospital stay.
